The computer ordered only 15 acres, and Buughabytians had to live for a full year off the government's stored surplus-thus pounding down the surplus, forcing up the price, eliminating the subsidy and balancing the Buughabytian budget for fifteen years-an unprecedented bit of nonsense that almost had permanent effects. Like the time the planetary computer for Buughabyta flipped its complete grain-futures series. There's an axiom in the galaxy: The more complicated the machine, the bigger mess it can make. Why wouldn't the fools take it from him? By HELEN M. Marissa Stapley is a journalist and the author of the acclaimed novel Things to Do When It’s Raining. What are they hiding, and what price will these couples pay for finding out?Īs a deadly tropical storm descends on the coast, trapping the hosts and the guests on the resort, secrets are revealed, loyalties are tested and not one single person-or their marriage-will remain unchanged by what follows. When both couples begin Harmony’s intensive therapy program, it becomes clear that Harmony is not all it seems-and neither are Miles and Grace themselves. But what has really torn them apart is too devastating to talk about. Shell and Colin fight constantly: after all, Colin is a workaholic, and Shell always comes second to his job as an executive at a powerful mining company. Johanna and Ben have a marriage that looks perfect on the surface, but in reality, they don’t know each other at all. Miles and Grace Markell, the “last resort” offers a chance for partners to repair their relationships in a luxurious setting on the gorgeous Mayan Riviera. The Harmony Resort promises hope for struggling marriages. Loulou as a kid and the entire guardian monster bit was pretty cute! Darling did a very good job at developing Loulou’s character and the way she slowly learned to embrace the kind of woman she wanted to be. I also had a bit of a hard time with the story as it deals with cancer, so if that’s in any way triggering for you, please be careful when picking this up. That said, the writing and the way Darling developed the plot and their relationship was really really good, so I was still able to enjoy the book. So to get this out of the way, the big age gap (19 years) in Welcome to the Dark Side did make me pretty uncomfortable because Zeus and Loulou met when she was seven and he was a grown man and they got together when she was still 17. Only, I didn’t know that Zeus Garro was the President of The Fallen MC and when you made a deal with a man who is worse than the devil, there was no going back… So, when I finally ran into the man I’d been writing to since he saved my life as a little girl and he offered to show me the dark side of life before I left it for good, I said yes. I was a seventeen-year-old paradigm of virtue and I was tired of it. What the hell kind of reward was that for a boring life well lived? I ate my vegetables, volunteered at the local autism centre and sat in the front pew of church every Sunday. He was afraid he would do something dumb such as forget his hat or step in the water, and then people would give him another dot. After a while he had so many dots that he didn't want to go outside. He would try to explain why he fell and say something silly, and the Wemmicks would give him more dots. Sometimes when he fell, it would scar his wood, so the people would give him more dots. And when he fell, the others would gather around and give him dots. He tried to jump high like the others, but he always fell. Some Wemmicks had stars all over them! Every time they got a star it made them feel so good that they did something else and got another star. Still others knew big words or could sing very pretty songs. Some could lift big sticks high above their heads or jump over tall boxes. But if the wood was rough or the paint chipped, the Wemmicks gave dots. The pretty ones, those with smooth wood and fine paint, always got stars. Up and down the streets all over the city, people could be seen sticking stars or dots on one another. Each Wemmick had a box of golden star stickers and a box of gray dot stickers. And all day, every day, the Wemmicks did the same thing: They gave each other stickers. But all were made by the same carver and all lived in the village. Some had big noses, others had large eyes. His workshop sat on a hill overlooking their village. Each of the wooden people was carved by a woodworker named Eli. I only posted it because it inspired me and I hope it will inspire you too!! :) There are some nice details, like an Information Ministry staffer asking Garrels for batteries for his shortwave radio so he can "find out what's really going on." But her off-the-cuff impressions of the response of ordinary Iraqis to the war, which rang so true at the time, come off now as obvious and overly simple. She admits her limited purview, restricted in what she could see by the Iraqi Information Ministry and later by the hazards of the battlefield, and with the manuscript completed only months after her return, the reader is left feeling that reflection is not Garrels's strong suit. Though she writes in the same clear, straightforward prose familiar to radio listeners, the powerful stuff of her live broadcasts translates poorly to the written page in this day-by-day account of her experience. After all the major television networks pulled out their staffs, Garrels stayed in the middle of it, painting with words the only picture available to most Americans of what was going on in the center of Iraqi power and in the hearts and minds of the frightened and confused residents. Enduring everything from bombing raids and artillery barrages to bad food, corrupt officials and aggressive border guards, this veteran war correspondent continued to report for NPR from her perch at the Palestine Hotel throughout the coalition drive toward Baghdad. The book starts out with Claire Anderson expressing her disdain for Tristan Miles and his reputation in the industry. → Read All About our Adventures in Thailand We have a month-long rental and I have been enjoying exploring the island by scooter, eating Thai food, and slamming The Miles High Club Series. Now I love to read and could easily finish a book or two a day if I could stop working and spend my whole life at the beach. I’m currently in Phuket Thailand! After finishing The Stopover which is the first book in the series I was immediately ready for the second. Full-time adventure lover and part-time book addict. Genre: Romance Where in the world am I Reading? Title: The Takeover: The Miles High Club #2 Read my book review and find out if The Takeover by TL Swan should be your next read! The Takeover Book Review The book covers loss, love, second chances, and brings lots of laughs. As the second installment of The Miles High Club book series, The Takeover by TL Swan doesn’t disappoint! I actually think it takes a good first book (The Stopover) and swings it into a fun series that you won’t be able to stop reading. Ali, meanwhile, is a warrior and second son to the king. Daughter to a long dead queen, last in a royal family of oppressive leaders Nahri returns to the city her ancestors built to meet the rulers who defeated her family. But when a Djinn appears, magical and angry, she enters the world she is meant to belong in. Swindling on the streets of Cairo to survive with gifts she doesn’t understand Nahri is poor, desperate and powerful. Although it’s inticing location and wealth of world building makes it unique and captivating the novels complex history and backstory gives the reader a steep learning curve while presenting a complex and almost over detailed realm. The City of Brass is an intoxicating, magical and creative tale presenting a unique fantasy setting, compelling characters linked by an efficacious plot. Then Jimmy's daughter is savagely murdered.įor a time, I thought I was reading George P Pelecanos, the other hip noir chronicler of blue-collar lives. Sean is a cop, Jimmy is an ex-con running a café and Dave is struggling to fight his demons. What happens to Dave in the four days he's missing changes him and the nature of their friendship irrevocably. Dave gets into the car, Sean and Jimmy don't. In the Seventies, three boys are playing in the street when a car draws up. With Mystic River, his first 'stand alone' novel, he stays in the working-class neighbourhoods to tell a powerful story of childhood friendship and inexorably doomed lives. Like the late George V Higgins, his beat, in his five novels featuring private investigators Patrick Kenzie and Angela Gennaro, is blue-collar Boston. In the relatively short time since his Shamus Award-winning debut, A Drink Before the War, Lehane, a 35-year-old from Boston, has established himself as a major noir writer, the one Michael Connelly calls 'the heir apparent'. Dennis Lehane is one of the wonder-boys of hardboiled US crime fiction. |
